The 34Kw solar pv system will meet all the power needs of the new library and also serve as a hands-on teaching tool about solar energy for library patrons. Other sustainable attributes include geothermal heating and cooling to provide a year-round low cost and a rainwater collection system to collect and reuse rainwater for landscape irrigation and to mitigate runoff and relieve the storm water system of inflow. LED lighting and energy-saving insulation will also mitigate energy costs with a target of net zero energy consumption.
