Trinity High School SmartFlower Solar

Trinity Area High School in Washington County, PA had an ambitious plan to become a leader in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) education and promote renewable energy.  WPPSEF provided $25,000 to co-fund the purchase a SmartFlower Pop Plus to further their sustainable energy initiatives and to continue the school’s focus on career education to better prepare students for a competitive workforce. Having the SmartFlower solar technology onsite shifted their educational paradigm from textbook learning to true application. The SmartFlower is an innovative sculptural solar flower with advanced photovoltaic solar panels that open and close to the sun for maximum efficiency.  Trinity High School has three Smartflowers that are used to give back to their community, producing energy to supplant the energy consumption in the Trinity High School Freight Farm. The Freight Farm produces 1,200 heads of lettuce per week, all of which is donated to the greater Washington County Food Bank.

Impact

First school in the country to install the SmartFlower solar system.

The SmartFlower has been integrated into the Trinity’s STEAM curriculum.

Using the SmartFlower to help raise produce for a local food bank – priceless.
