Janet Weis Children’s Hospital Solar PV

The Geisinger Medical Center was awarded a $100,000 grant to co-fund the installation of a 38-kilowatt (kw) roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital (JWCH) in Danville, PA. The solar PV array will provide over 10% of the JWCH’s energy needs. The project won the 2016 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence, recognizing the installation of solar panels on the roof of Geisinger’s JWCH as an efficient, non-polluting, sustainable energy source. The grant also supported installation of an educational kiosk in JWCH’s main entrance lobby. The educational kiosk serves as a community hub to learn about Geisinger’s solar PV system. Sparking interest within the pediatric community on how the JWCH is powered, in part by solar, is an important educational aspect of the project.

Impact

  • Solar PV projected to produce 41,645 kWh/yr.
  • On-site solar avoids 29 MT of COe emissions/ year
  • Supports pediatric health care
  • Award winning solar PV showcase
  • Supports Geisinger’s commitment to clean energy to improve local health
