Powdermill Nature Reserve LEED Gold Building Expansion
The Powdermill Nature Reserve (PNR), the environmental research center of Carnegie Museum of Natural History, is located in Rector, PA. Researchers conduct diverse long and short-term scientific studies in forest ecology, herpetology, botany, invertebrate zoology, and ornithology. In 2007, PNR invested approximately $5M in a 10,000 square foot expansion, designed to LEED Gold standards, and the renovation of the original adjacent building. The LEED Gold headquarters has two furnished classrooms; user-friendly audio-visual equipment; a large deck overlooking the Powdermill woods; two exhibition galleries focusing on avian research and stream ecology; a conference room; an outdoor teaching area; and a catering kitchen. A Marsh Machine wastewater treatment system ties in with the Living Stream aquarium demonstrating that the organisms that live in Powdermill’s exceptional value stream can also live in the system-treated water.
