Rooftop Solar in Healthcare
Geisinger is one of the most energy-efficient hospital systems in Pennsylvania. Building healthier communities while reducing the total cost of delivering health care are core to its mission. In 2024, WPEF committed $75,000 to co-fund a 325 kW DC, rooftop mounted solar array at Geisinger’s HealthPlex in State College. At that time, Geisinger was constructing a two-floor addition to house existing specialties and services such as family practice, imaging services, orthopaedics and pediatrics. As part of that expansion, Geisinger replaced its roof prior to installing the solar. The solar array is projected to provide 337,000 kWh annually.
The 325 kW DC solar array was energized in late 2025. By adding this solar, Geisinger is relieving its energy use and decreasing its peak demand from the electric grid. Decreasing its reliance on the electric grid can reduce air pollution while improving the health and comfort of those visiting Geisinger’s HealthPlex in State College.
