Elk Regional Health Center Biomass Expansion
The Elk Regional Health Center (ERHC) installed a biomass boiler heating system manufactured by Advanced Recycling Equipment, at their healthcare facility located in Saint Marys, PA. The biomass heating system was comprised of a CHALLENGER CCUE612-S “steam” model with 15MM BTU output with an extended combustion zone, auto de-ash, PCC controls, 450 HP steam boiler, dual truck unloading system with transfer conveyors. The installation of the biomass heating system was completed in early 2008 with strong support from the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority. Total project cost was $2.3M. ERHC began purchasing locally produced whole tree wood chips to sawdust with a moisture content of 30-50% as their primary fuel source. The biomass heating system was designed to supply the additional heating needs of Pinecrest Manor, a long-term care facility adjacent to the hospital. Once the biomass system was installed, ERHC worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Stackpole-Hall Foundation, and the WPPSEF to raise $216,000 to install the steam line to Pinecrest Manor. In late 2008, WPPSEF provided $69,000 to ERHC for their steam line expansion project.
