Rooftop Solar Powering CCRRA
With over 28,000 curbside customers, 125 drop-off recycling bins and over 1,000
commercial customers throughout the county, the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority (CCRRA) provides Centre County residents and the Pennsylvania State University many avenues to recycle. CCRRA collects over 10,000 tons of recyclables and over 111,000 tons of trash using trucks fueled by renewable natural gas. In 2025, CCRRA installed a 791 KW rooftop mounted solar PV system. The solar, which is installed on multiple buildings, is projected to produce 939,000 kWh of electricity/ year and save CCRRA an estimated $90,000/ year. The solar will power the CCRRA and adjacent Clean Energy Fuels Corporation’s renewable natural gas facility. The solar arrays were installed by Envinity which is headquartered only a few miles from CCRRA. WPEF provided a $75,000 grant to support the solar PV installation and the educational solar displays in the Ted Onufrak Interpretative Center.
Impact
Solar offsetting more than 100% of CCRRA’s annual electric use
Solar powers CCRRA’s renewable natural gas station
Educational solar displays designed by Penn State
Owning your own solar PV system and S-RECS – very cool
